How does the oil life meter work in my car?

I recently purchased a new Honda Accord 2007. I've noticed that has a counter that tells how much oil the engine life is gone. When I first bought it said 100%. While driving more, gradually sinking. When reaching a certain percentage, I'm supposed to change it. I am fascinated as to how this works. How can tell how well a car that is that oil is the engine? And how accurate this meter? Is it just a guide or something put in? Besides, nothing has sensors that need to be replaced? I would like to meters around with a bad oil life tells me that my oil is fine when you need to be replaced!

It really has no idea what the state of the oil is in Lo it does is that it is connected to the computer as it takes the RPMs of the crank, how many times you start and off the vehicle, the speed of travel, and some made other computer and spits out a guestamation. I think that some of these cars are pretty good, but others are not even close. The wosrt are GM vehicles. We further Trail Blazers all the time you have 8k, 9k, or even 10k miles on the original oil and oil life is still at 15% or less. The oil is 2 quarts low and very dirty. I would go by the owners manual recommendations on a Honda is probably 7500 miles. Maybe even 5000, but not the 3000 that companies Oil companies want to do it.
